For the budding thespian, the first action to be taken on this perilous
journey into the realm of acting is to find someone looking for
an actor. Makes sense, right? For the inexperienced, the best place
to gain your chops are at the local universities. You need to find
a student filmmaker. To do so, roam the halls and look for the black
framed glasses, dirty Converse, and corduroys.
If that doesn't work, check the postings around the building holding
the film and theater programs. Rip off a phone number for a casting
call, and, well, call and attempt to be casted. Student filmmakers
will entertain your will to act because they cannot afford Matt
Damon yet.
It's like looking for a job, almost. Ever do that? Then you have
nailed down the basic essential tools for locating an acting gig.
You'll need to put together a resume'. What can you do? What have
you done? Any interesting skills that someone might use? Can you
sing? Backflip? Breakdance? Have you done any other related work
that might impress someone looking for you? It all counts.
Get a headshot and choose your best side. You don't have to mortgage
the farm to get your mug on Kodak, but a black and white 8"x10"
glossy with a professional background will be needed. If you require
an example of what your should look like, get online (hey, you already
are!) and google it. Basically, you'll need something with your
resume so the casting director or producer can look at.
You can start with a paying gig by looking to become an extra.
Depending on the production and the criteria, you can earn yourself
a check. You'll be herded around like cattle and may not stand out,
but it’s for the greater good. It will give you the invaluable
experience of being on a set and the ability to say, "Yeah,
I was in that piece of crap."
There are a number of sites that cater to searching for talent.
Some are free, some are premium, member sites. Just do a search,
kid.
Good luck and godspeed.
