Media

Out of the gate, you'll need a screenplay to direct, or at the very least, a high school buddy with a horrible garage band that you can shoot a video for.

If you have no screenplay, or you had no friends in high school (which is why you probably watched so many movies as a kid and wanted to make films in the first place), then you are going to have to seek one, or write it yourself. (If you want to be a young Kevin Smith and write it all by your lonely, then read our other section entitled, "So You Want To Be A Writer???")

Don't know what to do? You may want to roll off of your mother's couch and consider film school. Hey, there's a shocker! There is the traditional film school; undergraduate and graduate. Some cost mere pennies to attend while others will have you out on Royal Street selling your bodies and paying back that financial aid for the rest of your children's lives. It all depends on what you expect from the school.

There are more concentrated and specific technical schools you may want to think about. Consider them vocational schools for the media arts. They don't last as long as traditional schools but you won't have to be weighed down by that unnecessary Biology 101 class to fulfill your dreams of shooting your documentary on the mating habits of platypus, as cuddly as the platys are - especially when the crawl into bed with you at night and nuzzle against your beer belly.

Honestly, sporto, there is no better way to learn than by doing. Do you have a video camera? A decent computer? Then you can make a movie. It won't be Jumanji, but you can start getting a feel for it. Film your kids playing ball. Film a basketball game and edit it different ways to see how you can manipulate the suspense of who will win.

Do your homework on how other directors got their start. Your local literary retailer superstore is a haven to tons of books concerning films and filmmakers. Instead of that next six-pack, go buy a book and read, read, read.

There's no right or wrong way. There is only your way. With that said, grasshopper, go direct your first film and make a brother proud
